GeoNames is an open-source geographical database.

In addition to more than 5000 manually added locations in our database, we now offer 6 million more locations using GeoNames on timeanddate.com.

Millions of Locations

GeoNames is an open-source geographical database. By using this geographical information in combination with our services we can offer local data for more locations. Our astronomy services, including sunrise and sunset, moonrise and moonset, and eclipses, are all exact to the location. However, there are some limitations:

  • Weather defaults to the nearest forecast point and measuring station.
  • Airport information defaults to the nearest airport to your location within your country.

Location Names

Because users of GeoNames can manually add, edit, and correct locations in the database some issues can occur:

  • There can be several locations with the same name. Check the geographical position on the map or via the longitude/latitude information to see if it is the location you are looking for.
  • Very small locations can have the same name as a larger location. These can be in another part of a country, or in another country altogether. Check the geographical position on the map or longitude/ latitude to see if it is the location you are looking for.

Personal World Clock and Home Location

The use of GeoNames is still under development on our site, so you might experience limitations with some of our services, including adding them as a home location and to the Personal World Clock.

We still manually add larger locations that can be used across all of our services. GeoNames are not supported in our apps.
